Festival 2009 - Sunday, 6th September, 2009 - 12 noon

First of all the Brentford Festival Committee would like to thank all those wonderful people who attended on Sunday. They made the Festival the fantastic event it was. We will be posting lots of photographs shortly for you to check out. We started counting people in (remember there is no entrance fee) but stopped counting in case our stewards who were clicking the counters developed repetitive strain injury. At a rate of 10 or more per minute on one gate only, we estimate that there must have been between 10,000 to 13,000 visitors.

Secondly, we would like to thank the Mayor of Hounslow, Councillor Paul Lynch, and the Mayor of Ealing, Councillor Barbara Yerolemou, for opening the Festival and being so generous with their time during the day. The opening fanfares were provided by the bugles of the Boys Brigade. Thanks also to our President of the Brentford Chamber of Commerce, Peter Hughes (who kindly doubled as our professional photographer - free of charge, of course), and our ward councillors, Cllr Ruth Cadbury, Cllr Andrew Dakers and Cllr Matt Harmer, upon whom we can always rely for support. This was certainly a community day for everyone.

We have to thank this year's sponsors, without whom we could not have financed the event. You will find their logos on our Sponsors page. We mention them (with links to their websites) here: As well as these sponsors, the event could not take place without the huge support provided by:
  • Friends of Boston Manor whose members work all year round to improve Boston Manor Park and to provide community facilities and events, such as the vountarily run cafe and Brentford Festival. All proceeds from the bars, cafe, tea garden and PIMMS bar at the Festival will be invested in new equipment, furniture, events and projects within the park. FOBM contributes to and underwrites the cost of the Brentford Festival each year.
  • Continental Landscapes, whose employees, lead by Tony Keaveney, not only work all year to maintain Boston Manor Park to its Green Flag Award standard, but worked tirelessly setting up, stewarding and dismantling before, during and after the Event.
  • John Laing who have promised financial support and provided assistance prior to and during the Festival

Boston Manor House was open for tours and received over 400 visitors between 1.30 and 5.30 p.m.

Below are some, if not all, of the stalls who attended Festival 2009:
In addition to the above, Brentford Christmas Lights 2009 took a stall (fund-raising for Christmas Lights). As well as providing general information, they sold tickets to their 'Brentford at Syon Park' event being held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, 24th September, 2009 in the Great Conservatory in Syon Park. This event includes a Champagne Reception, Dinner, Music, Dancing, Auction and Raffle. We are informed that all tickets (priced at £40.00 each) have now been sold. Please visit the Brentford is Brilliant Website for information and updates on their fund-raising events.

Limousines LimoKnights displayed one of their limousines and offered visitors the opportunity to win a free limousine ride.

The local community was out in full force with 3 ward councillors, Safer Neighbourhood and the Fire Brigade all present and happy to offer advice and assistance. This Brentford Festival was a huge community event run by the community for the community and all other visitors who wished to share our event with us.

BBQfood Food There was a very diverse and International variety of food on offer, including: Steve Lakhani (burgers, kebabs, chips, etc.), The Sausage Man (German Sausages), F & L Ices, Mrs Housen (Afro food), Sarah Crowden (Grilled food and home made lamb koftas), Chef do Party (Valencian Paella), Shaks Snacks (Noodles and Thai curry), D's Food Hut (Caribbean, goat curry etc.), The Lord Nelson Pub, Brentford provided small versions of their menu, e.g. salt and pepper squid, battered haddock and chips, spicy chicken wings, devilled whitebait etc. There were many comments as to how good the quality and selection was. Thank you all for attending

The VikingsThe Vikings came, saw and conquered!

The Vikings came, re-enacted two battles and went (thankfully without any raping and pillaging). Our thanks to Temes Vikings for their exciting and fun contribution.
Bees The children had a great time on the fair rides, bungee (yes, bungee) jumping and climbing wall. With dog show, urban farm and pony rides, there were enough animals to entertain children and adults alike. Most of the charity and community stalls had games and tombolas for adults and children to join in with. There were games in the MUGA (multi use games area) and Boston Manor Tennis Club (BMTC) organised a tennis tournament.

Music Seven bands played on the main stage and the general consensus was that they had all earned their place at the Festival. Similar was said of the 5 bands who played on the stage in the quieter area in the walled garden, which also housed a PIMMS bar and Tea Garden run by the Friends of Boston Manor. With the support of a great production team run by David Whitty and stage managers/MCs David Viney (main stage) and Claire Gamble (walled garden), great music trickled subtly over the PA system around the park and visitors relaxed with a drink and good food or danced the Salsa. The bands were an eclectic mix of Blue Grass Americana, Salsa, Rock, Jazz, Gospel, Indie and Pop. Even the unfortunate band whose drummer was stranded on a motorway somewhere performed well and had a great reception from the crowds. We have received lots of comments as to how well both Stages were run from both musicians and visitors, thanks to the efficiency of Claire and Dave. The BF organising team are grateful to all the bands who attended and gave their time and music free of charge. Please check out the music by visiting the bands' websites.

On the main stage, starting at 12.30 p.m., were the following bands (please click here to download a 2009 Events & Stage Schedule)

The Main Stage MC/Stage Manager was Dave Viney
In the Walled Garden (acoustic) area, the following bands played:

We finish now with some comments from those who attended:

A comment from Maggie Pound, representing our main sponsor for 2009, the Ealing and Brentford Consolidated Charity:

"EBCC had a very successful day with our stall and from what I could tell the other stalls were also well frequented. I was able to meet a number of stallholders whose group EBCC had funded, which was a nice bonus. ... Everyone I spoke to was genuinely enjoying themselves and there was a lovely family atmosphere. Even the weather co-operated. So again a big thank you to all involved. "

Another comment from a resident who lives in Boston Manor Park:

"I thought the Festival was great and everybody seemed to be having such a good time. You must feel really pleased that so many people came along."

A comment from one of the bands attending:

"This is Phil from O Brother Where's Hank who played at the festival. I just wanted to drop you a line to say how much we enjoyed playing at the festival and how impressed we were with the organisation generally and in particular the professionalism of Dave and the team on the main stage. Thanks for asking us to play and we hope you'll want us back next year."

A comment from jazz singer Agatha Uchendu, quoted from the Hounslow Brentford Times:

"The festival is one of my favourite venues. It's great that I can showcase my vocal work especially among the population of Brentford, where I grew up and began singing. I couldn't have asked for a more loyal audience"

The Festival Organising Committee cannot guarantee that any third party mentioned as having booked a place will attend the Brentford Festival in 2009 on the day. Please accept our apologies on their behalf should this occur.
